Backlit preview: what the lamp will show

How it works

Thin lets light through (bright), thick blocks it (dark). Print standing up at 100% infill in white PLA, put a light behind it: the photo appears. The preview left simulates exactly that.

About the Lithophane Generator

A photo told in wall thickness: thin glows, thick shades. Classic white, or full colour with cyan, magenta and yellow layers for an AMS or MMU. Looks like a ghost on the shelf: until you put a light behind it.

Free and without an account: type the numbers, watch the live preview, download STL and 3MF files that Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer open directly. Looking for a ready-made size? The model library has 651 of them, each with its dimensions already filled in.

Questions

Which photos work best?

Photos with good contrast and a clear subject. Very dark images turn into a thick plate; the preview shows the backlit result before you print.

How big can a lithophane be?

Anything that fits your bed standing up. Typical portraits are 100 to 150 mm wide at 3 mm thickness; the generator keeps the thin areas above 0.8 mm.

How do I light it?

A window, a desk lamp behind it, or an LED strip in the self-standing frame version. The image only appears with light from behind.

Can I print a colour lithophane?

Yes, with an AMS or MMU and 4 or 5 filaments: white, cyan, magenta, yellow and optionally black. Turn on colour mode: thin colour layers go on the bed under a white relief, the plate prints flat at 0.08 mm layers, and the 3MF comes with every part already on its slot. Light it with a bright daylight-white lamp. Colour mode is in beta, so check a small test first.
